What Is Avocado Crema?

Avocado crema is a smooth, creamy sauce made with ripe avocado, lime juice, and a creamy base such as sour cream, Mexican crema, or Greek yogurt. It builds on a classic lime crema by adding avocado for extra richness and body.

Compared to guacamole, crema is lighter, smoother, and easier to drizzle. When made with lime, this Mexican sauce adds a bright, citrusy finish that pairs well with almost any dish.

Ways to Use Avocado Lime Crema

This sauce is best for dishes that benefit from a cool, creamy contrast to bold or spicy flavors. It works especially well as a finishing sauce, adding richness and balance to smoky, grilled, or heavily seasoned foods.

This avocado lime crema is especially good with grilled and richly seasoned dishes because it adds a smooth, cooling finish that balances bold flavors.

It’s also perfect for loaded dishes like carne asada fries, carne asada nachos, or cheesy options like carne asada quesadilla, especially when paired with grilled beef made using a classic carne asada marinade.

Tips for the Best Avocado Crema

  • Use ripe avocados for the smoothest texture and best flavor.
  • Fresh lime juice gives the sauce its bright, vibrant finish.
  • Blend thoroughly so the sauce is silky and lump-free.
  • Add water slowly to control the thickness.
  • Serve right away for the freshest color and flavor.

Easy Variations

This avocado crema is easy to customize depending on your flavor preferences. You can keep it simple or build on the base to create different variations that work with a wide range of dishes.

  • Spicy version: Add jalapeño or hot sauce
  • Tangier version: Use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream
  • Herb swap: Replace cilantro with parsley if preferred
  • Garlic boost: Add extra garlic for a bolder flavor
  • Dairy-free version: Use a plant-based yogurt for a dairy-free version

Avocado crema is ideal when you want a richer, smoother sauce, while lighter options like lime crema or cilantro lime crema work well when you’re looking for a brighter finish. For a smoky option, try chipotle crema.

How to Store It

Crema is best served fresh, but leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

To help prevent browning, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface before sealing the container. Stir before serving again.

Frequently Asked Questions
