Lime crema is a creamy, tangy taco sauce made with sour cream and fresh lime juice. It’s one of the easiest ways to add bright, citrusy flavor to tacos, grilled meats, and burrito bowls.

This simple sauce adds a bright, refreshing contrast to rich or spicy dishes and comes together in just a few minutes. It is especially popular for tacos because it balances bold flavors with a smooth, citrusy finish.

What Is Lime Crema Best For?

Lime crema is best for dishes that need a fresh, creamy contrast to bold or spicy flavors. It works especially well as a finishing sauce, adding brightness and balance to rich or heavily seasoned foods.

This sauce is especially good with grilled and richly seasoned dishes, including carne asada tacos and carne asada sliders, because it adds a cool, citrusy finish without overpowering the main flavors. It also works well as a topping for bowls and richly flavored tacos when you want a fresh contrast to smoky or spicy ingredients.

It’s also perfect for loaded dishes like carne asada fries, carne asada nachos, or cheesy options like carne asada quesadilla, especially when paired with grilled beef made using a classic carne asada marinade.

Why This Sauce Recipe Works

The combination of creamy dairy and fresh lime juice creates a balanced sauce that cuts through rich or spicy foods. The acidity brightens flavors, while the fat content smooths out heat and enhances texture.

Tips for the Best Crema

  • Use fresh lime juice for the best flavor
  • Start with less lime juice and adjust to taste
  • Do not over-thin the sauce—add liquid gradually
  • Use Mexican crema for a smoother, richer texture

How to Store Lime Crema

Store lime crema in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Stir before serving if separation occurs.

  • Spicy version: Add jalapeño or hot sauce
  • Cilantro lime crema: Add fresh cilantro for a herb-forward variation (see cilantro lime crema)
  • Garlic lime crema: Add extra garlic for stronger flavor
  • Thinner sauce: Add water or milk for a drizzle consistency
